We are here to assist the practitioner/student in reaching their BCC Kenpo Club goals: understanding dojo etiquette, developing and improving martial arts skills, and to create an encouraging atmosphere for the development of the Kenpo Club.

The Broward Community College Kenpo Club (formerly BCC Kobudo Club) was founded in the summer of 2002 by Sensei Michael Nolan. The Kenpo Club is dedicated to preserving and promoting the ideals, practices, and spirit of the Art of BCC Kenpo: courtesy, integrity, humility, and self-control by providing the practitioner/student with a safe training environment.

What is Kenpo
Kenpo can be translated as the 'Law of the Fist' , or 'Chinese fist'.

BCC Kenpo stresses a mix of 'hard' and 'soft' techniques. The student's initial training is the understanding of the kihon waza (the basic techniques).

These basic techniques would include blocks, strikes, stances and kicks. Once the student becomes familiar with the basics, the student is then taught softer techniques, employing redirection and parrying. At this point, the student begins to employ these new skills while performing kata, bunkia , and kumite. It is also important that the student understands centering and balance before attempting a technique. Kenpo is a martial art that strives to teach the student self-control, confidence, and self-defense.

Initially, Kihon Waza (basic techniques), katas (forms) assist with developing the student's mental concentration and mental discipline. As the students progress, the katas become more challenging in technique, body position, and movement helping them to develop self-control and confidence.

Kumite (sparring) is an exercise in which students are given an opportunity to experiment with their skills developed in Kihon waza. During this time students have the opportunity to develop their reflexes and timing in a controlled encouraging atmosphere for the development of BCC Kobudo Club's practitioners.
