Instructor
Ingo Weigel, a Chicago-based martial arts expert, has been studying a newly popular form of self-defense called Wing Tsun for the past 15 years. Born in a small town in former East Germany, Ingo has been living with a constant quest for knowledge of both body and mind since his early childhood. After playing numerous team sports and studying Western Boxing and Judo for several years, Ingo finally found a satisfying outlet in Wing Tsun.

In 1999, Ingo decided to leave Germany for the United States and has since trained with one of the world’s most revered instructors, Emin Boztepe. Now in Chicago, he seeks to share his knowledge of this unique and realistic self-defense discipline with others.

Currently the Chief Instructor for Chicago Self-Defense, Ingo offers reality-based self-defense classes for men and women, incorporating the art of Wing Tsun, a self-defense discipline that is simple and effective for anyone, no matter what their size or strength. With these skills, even a small woman can protect herself from the strongest men by using techniques that take advantage of her natural abilities combined with the force of the attacker.

Origin of Wing Tsun
Wing Tsun (WT) originated some 300 years ago, founded by a Chinese nun named Ng Mui and her first student, Yim Wing Tsun.

Ng Mui was one of the few people to escape the sacking and burning of the Shaolin Temples by the Manchurian government in their effort to bring about an end to the Shaolin's power. Ng Mui and a few of the monks managed to escape and seek refuge throughout China, avoiding capture by the government.

While trained in the Shaolin Kung Fu system, Ng Mui knew that she needed something better to overcome the highly skilled monks who had betrayed her Shaolin brethren to the Manchurians. She thought, however, that the existing martial art systems were too complex and placed too much reliance on power techniques and strong stances.

Ng Mui was determined to design a fighting system to take advantage of the weak points of the Shaolin Kung Fu system and work as a direct antithesis to the theories it set forth. As a result, instead of using brute force to overcome an attacker, her new system would 'borrow' the force of the enemy, or 'give way' to it.

Wing Tsun: Self Defense for the Modern Times
We recently conducted a survey and asked women in the Chicago area what they were looking for in a self-defense course. Surprisingly, 64% of women who had taken a self-defense course did not feel safer, nor were they able to rely on those techniques. One in three said they had no idea how to handle an attacker. The statistics are staggering. Are you able to protect yourself as well as your loved ones?

According to the survey, women are most concerned by confrontations that could occur in small, tight areas like an elevator, a hallway, a bar/night club or a parking garage.

Our entire course is based on Wing Tsun Kung Fu, a martial arts form created by a woman. Our classes are focused on how to help you be the most effective against any attacker.

Julie Kong started her studies in mixed martial arts twelve years ago with the culmination of a 3rd degree purple belt which included proficiency in kickboxing, grappling, thai boxing, self defense, and kali. Learning a blended form of martial arts was helpful in exposing Julie to various martial arts systems and techniques.

Julie started studying Wing Tsun Kung Fu (WT) and Escrima three years ago because she wanted a more practical approach to self-defense for women that took into account her physique and her own physical strengths. As a 10th level WT and 5th level Escrima student, both styles have increased Julie's ability to effectively defend herself with faster reflexes and reactions against opponents.

As an assistant instructor at Chicago Self-Defense, Julie's goal in teaching women is to tailor the classes based on the women's interests and needs so that the self-defense knowledge and skills they learn become intrinsic in nature and instinctive on the streets.
