Aikido and Judo Club of Clear Lake

Chief Instructor:
Raymond Williams, 2nd Dan

Instructor
Welcome to the Aikido and Judo Club of Clear Lake. I started the school in 1980 after receiving the rank of Nidan, 2nd degree Black Belt. Classes were held on a small portion of the mat that the Seabrook/Bay Area Judo Club graciously marked off for our use at the Clear Lake City Community Recreation Center. We stayed with CLCCA until 1990 when we split from the SBA Judo Club and moved to the Williams Indoor Pool complex. At this dojo, class size continued to expand along with the mat. Also in 1990, a branch club was started at NASA's Gilruth Center by Mr. Leon Blum. Although the dojos were separate we remained together as far as promotions and "paper work" were concerned. This enabled students to work out at either dojo depending on their work schedule or desire to get in more practice. Due to an unfortunate turn of events the Williams Pool Dojo closed in 1993. The current dojo was opened in October of 1994.

Iaido
MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE: 2004 - Present

RANK: Nidan

ASSOCIATIONS: Seitokai / Muso-Jikiden-Eishin-Ryu

COMMENTS: I've been around martial arts most of my life, however could never find a martial art that felt right. In 2004, after watching a black belt ceremony of a close friend in a mixed martial art, I had a renewed interest in finding an art for myself. That is when I found Clear Lake Iaido, and haven't looked back since.

Beyond Iaido, I would love to study almost all of the koryu Japanese martial arts, but know I that it is nearly impossible in today's time. I am currently interested in starting a traditional Kyudo study group here in Houston/Clear Lake.

COMMENTS:
John originally started aikido at age 8 with Sensei Paul Chang in Sedalia, Missouri. Dabbling in various karate styles through high school, which also happened to be the heyday of the Chuck Norris movies, he eventually went off to college at the University of Missouri Ð Rolla. There, he began training with Mr. Mark Prosser, who is now a 5TH Degree in the American Taekwondo Association. Transferring universities to Southwest Missouri State University, now called Missouri State University, he continued training in taekwondo, and added the art of Muay Thai to his striking arts arsenal
