Empire State Karate
CHIEF INSTRUCTOR: Joyce
Santamaria, 5th Dan
Empire State Karate is committed to sharing
with the community, the benefits of dedication and growth through martial arts. ESK is
aware of the need for personalized attention and guidance for small children; separate
from the main dojo, Empire State Karate provides smaller classrooms, completely dedicated
to their "White Dragons".(ESK 4-6 Yr. White Belts)
Empire State Karate recognizes growth in
skill and maturity in their students. In the main dojo the larger group fosters an
atmosphere where students begin to learn from each other. At this stage students are
taught the importance of the martial arts code of conduct and their responsibility to set
an example for other students.
Once students graduate to the main dojo
personalized attention is maintained by our many talented instructors. Students will begin
to learn the use of martial arts tools, developing strength , coordination and technique.
One of the most important things at ESK is
the development of good character in students, in and out of the dojo. Besides learning
how to physically defend themselves, students are learning to use their good judgment,
inner focus, confidence and self control to diffuse conflict before anyone becomes a
victim. Upper rank students are learning to apply their dedication and perseverance in
martial arts, to all aspects of their life. Empire State Karate student's mental self
defense helps them gain confidence so they can confront a situation before it becomes a
conflict. Their physical self-defense skills complement the mental part by giving students
assurance that they can physically defend themselves, without getting into serious
trouble. Typically, when confronted with conflict a person will freeze and go into fight
or flight mode; with a good mix of mental and physical skills a student will automatically
think, "Yes, I can handle this." Throughout a student's martial arts career,
they are invited to compete in organized tournaments, which help promote sportsmanship,
and team spirit. Tournaments are excellent for developing good control while maintaining
high intensity, mentally and physically. Students of Joyce Santamaria's Empire State
Karate take pride in their school, their skills, and most importantly themselves.
