Shotokan Karate A popular Japanese Karate
system founded by Gichin Funakoshi and influenced directly by the Okinawan style of
Shuri-te. It is characterized by powerful linear techniques and deep, strong stances.
Funakoshi practiced calligraphy and signed his work with
his pen name , Shoto. Hence , the school where he taught came to be known as Shoto's
school. Today, Shotokan Karate is one of the four major Japanese karate system and is
practiced throughout the world
What does Shotokan mean?
When written in Japanese character, the word Shotokan is
composed of three character. The is "sho " (pronounced show, with a long 0) and
comes from the word "matsu "means pine tree. The second word is "to ",
(pronounced toe). To is the character for wave. The sound that the wind makes when it
blows through pine tree is pine wave. Funakoshi was a poet and calligrapher who would sign
his work with the pen name of Shoto. In 1939 Funakoshi's students built the world's first
free standing karate dojo in Japan. In honor of their teacher they called it the Shotokan,
the House of Pine Waves, or House Shoto ( Funakoshi). Oddly enough his student did not
refer to their style as Shotokan. It was the outsiders who gave it the name. Funakoshi and
his students had another name for what they did and it was Karate.
