What is Freestyle Muay Thai
Freestyle Muay Thai is the ultimate Muay Thai kickboxing
training academy in the Tampa Bay area.
Instructor Brian Cleary offers Muay Thai training programs
for helping individuals to achieve their goals. Goals may vary
from improving your fitness level, learning self-defense,
competing in amateur/professional Muay Thai bouts, and/or
sharpening stand-up skills for an MMA event.
Our North Tampa Muay Thai training facility offers a
regulation raised boxing ring, mirrored walls, 12 heavy bags, 3
speed bags, 3 double-end bags, specialized Muay Thai equipment
and full shower facilities.
We offer adult Muay Thai classes in a group setting for all
skill levels. The training classes focus primarily on Muay Thai
techniques; however, we also integrate other styles such as
western boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, Judo, and mixed martial
arts [MMA].
Brian began training Muay Thai in 1996 in Long Island, NY
under now "The Ultimate Fighter" trainer Ray Longo at his
International Martial Arts Academy (IMAA). At Ray Longo's, Brian
also had the opportunity to train with IMAA affiliate Kru Phil
Nurse NYC. He has cross-trained in other styles such as Western
Boxing, Submission Wrestling and Kali.
Brian has traveled internationally to train and fight in
Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Bangkok, Thailand and holds a current
Muay Thai record of (4W-0L) with 4 KO'S.
Brian holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of
South Florida. Upon graduation in 2000, Brian has moved forward
to become a certified Master Fitness Trainer with IFPA and a
Performance Enhancement Specialist with NASM. He also holds
certifications as a certified speed, agility, and quickness
(SAQ) Instructor, Flexibility Specialist, Weight Management
Instructor and as an APEX Fitness and Nutrition Professional.
Through his strong education and experience working with
athletes of all ages, Brian is able to set Freestyle Muay Thai
apart from standard martial arts schools by aiming to enhance
not only our student's fighting skills but their overall
athleticism as well. Integration of SAQ drills; strength and
plyometric exercises and flexibility are among some of the tools
used to achieve our goals.
Cross-Training
Cross-Training is a team fitness program that integrates
cardiovascular, strength, S.A.Q, and plyometric exercises. This
program's goals are based on improving the athlete's lactic acid
threshold, cardiovascular staying power, total body/core
strength, and overall athleticism [run faster, jump higher, get
stronger]. See
Cross-Training pictures.
Cardiovascular Building Our team performs
baseline/progression runs, interval, and speedwork. This
training is performed on the track and/or field.
Strength Training Full body exercises based upon the 7
movements of the human body.
Speed/Agility/Quickness [S.A.Q] Exercises are
performed while working with agility ladders, medicine balls,
cones drills, and plyometrics. S.A.Q gears the athlete's muscles
and joints for explosive movements in all directions. These
drills also help to enhancing the efficiency of neurological
response, improving coordination and preventing injury.
Plyometrics A type of exercise that uses explosive
movements to develop muscular power and the ability to generate
a large amount of force quickly. Some examples would be medicine
ball chest pass, jump squats, etc.
Muay Thai Conditioning Various technique work, heavy
bag, Thai pad, focus mitt, contact drills, etc geared towards
preparing the student for self-defense, sparring, and/or
competition.
Technique Work The learning phase of a Muay Thai
skill. The student's open forum for practicing a specific Muay
Thai skill with the instructor(s) present.
Pad Work Repetition of single and/or combination Muay
Thai techniques using different striking pads. Pad work is done
with an instructor or teammate during a particular training
session. Focus mitts, Muay Thai pads, belly pads, and shin
guards are among some of the equipment used.
Contact Drills Repetition of single and/or combination
Muay Thai techniques using your teammate as the target at 50%
strength. Contact drills are done with a partner in order to
establish your range, reaction, and form in a controlled
setting. Students are encouraged to use mouthpieces and shin
protection. Contact drills are important in preparing a student
for sparring.
Sparring Students who are deemed qualified to spar
will have an opportunity to practice their Muay Thai techniques
in a “live” setting. Sparring is done at 80-90% strength and is
conducted with respect for your opponent. Students are required
to have 16oz training gloves, shin guards, groin protection and
a mouthpiece (headgear is optional).
