Master Arthur Cohen is a nationally and
internationally known personal safety expert. He has been training in
the martial arts for almost 40 years. In 1962, he began training under
Dr. Richard Chun, 9th Dan, in Tae Kwon Do. In 1980, he was promoted to
5th Dan. Over the past 40 years, he has actively trained in jiu jitsu,
police defensive tactics, Arnis and a variety of other martial arts.
In the early ‘80s, Master Cohen received an Instructor’s Certification
in the Lanada System of Arnis under Amante Marinas. In 1983, he
published Lethal Floor Fighting with Masters Publications in Canada.
Two years later, he produced two ground fighting videos with Panther
Productions. Arthur introduced his Spontaneous Ground Defense system
to the law enforcement community, in the early ‘80s, when the current
thinking was, “Once you are down, you are dead meat.” In addition, he
is one of the original members of the American Society of Law
Enforcement Trainers since its inception in the mid ‘80s. Because of
his innovative work in the areas of martial arts, police defensive
tactics and school and personal safety, he is often found instructing
the instructors or training the trainers.
Since 1996, Arthur has trained with Dr. Les
Knight, the creator of ISC Control Points, and was recently given the
responsibility of adapting the ISC Control Point program for martial
arts practitioners and was designated “Master Trainer” and Director of
Training for this project. Recognizing the potential this carefully
researched program had for martial artists and others involved in
self-defense, Master Cohen was excited about implementing this new
project.
After the murder of a former
female student in 1980, Professor Cohen researched and designed the book
and slide program “Become Streetwise!” A Woman’s Guide to Personal
Safety. He has worked closely with groups involved with youth safety
including the National Crime Prevention Council and presented his unique
women’s program at the National Youth Crime Prevention Conference for
the past two years. Most recently, the program was presented at the
National Youth Summit on Preventing Violence in Washington DC and
later in the spring at the Int’l Youth Crime Watch Conference in
Orlando.
Professor Cohen, sometimes
referred to as the “Streetwise Professor” because of his work in the
personal safety field, has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Hunter
College and a Master of Arts degree from Stony Brook University. He
currently teaches and designs programs for The Center for School and
Personal Safety Research, a sub-group of Target Consultants Int’l.
What’s more, he has designed over 30 “cutting edge” personal safety
programs for educators, health and law enforcement professionals,
martial artists and the general public. Presently, an adjunct professor
for Alfred University, he is currently teaching two graduate courses on
school violence prevention. Professor Cohen is a member of the National
Speakers Association and has spoken at over 50 state and national
conferences for every conceivable group.
Over the years, Professor
Cohen has been added to Who’s Who in Karate, Who’s Who in Law
Enforcement Training, Who’s Who of America’s Teachers and Who’s Who in
Professional Speaking. In addition, he was recognized by the Defensive
Tactics Newsletter with their 1996 Leadership Award for his research in
police defensive tactics and his “Become Streetwise” women’s safety
program. Later that same year, a martial arts organization awarded him
the 1996 Pioneer in Martial Arts Award.
