Instructors
David
Oddy has been practicing karate for over 26
years including 3 years in Okinawa, Japan where
he trained directly with Miyazato Eiichi Sensei
and other senior students at The Jundokan,
Okinawa Goju-ryu’s main dojo. He has also had
the opportunity to train with many senior
teachers and coaches over the years, both in the
United States and in Japan. David remains a
member of The Jundokan So Honbu Dojo and
continues to visit on an annual basis for
personal instruction in Okinawa, Japan.
Prior to shifting his focus to a purely
traditional practice, David had a successful
competitive career. In addition to many local
and regional tournament wins, David has won five
US National Championships from the USA-NKF and
its predecessors as the US Olympic Committee’s
recognized governing bodies for the sport of
karate. Two of these were during a brief return
to competition in 2006, exactly 20 years after
his first national championship victory. He also
represented the United States at the 1989
Goodwill Games against the Japanese Junior Team
and on the 1994 US National Karate Team at the
WKF World Championships in Malaysia.
David has also coached five other athletes to
national championship victories and has taught
karate at a Syracuse University karate club.
Sergey
Kushnir has been practicing karate for over 20 years in Russia
and the United States. His experience is diverse including
additional expertise in Aikido. Sergey joined Syracuse Jundokan
in 2005 and made his first trip to Okinawa in February of 2007
to train at The Jundokan.
Sergey also has a passion for
Olympic-style sport karate and has worked with karate athletes
and coaches to improve their competitive skills. He holds
technical coaching credentials in both the AAU and USANKF karate
programs and deserves a great amount of credit for the recent
successes of the Syracuse Jundokan Competition Team.
About goju-ryu karate-do
|
Goju-ryu karate-do is an Okinawan
style of karate founded by Miyagi Chojun Sensei who
started his training in Naha Te at age 14 under the
tutelage of Higaonna Kanryo Sensei, also of Okinawa.
Following Miyagi Sensei's death in 1953, the leadership
of goju-ryu was passed to Miyazato Eiichi Sensei who
founded The Jundokan as the world-wide heaquarters of
goju-ryu in 1955. After Miyazato Sensei's passing in
1999, leadership of The Jundokan passed to his son,
Miyazato Yoshihiro Kancho, who continues to promote the
practice of Miyagi Sensei's goju-ryu karate-do with the
help of many senior practitioners who train regularly at
The Jundokan.
Literally, goju-ryu means
"hard/soft style" and it is characterized by a balance
of hardness and softness in all areas of practice. Our
training consists of conditioning exercise to promote
fitness, kihon training to refine basic technique, kata
and bunkai training to learn the fighting patterns of
our style and other partner drills to develop techniques
into applicable skills.
Syracuse Jundokan is
operated by a current member of The Jundokan and a
direct student of Miyazato Eiichi Sensei prior to his
passing in 1999. Our instructor makes annual trips to
Okinawa, Japan to make sure our training conforms to
that promoted in Okinawa and there are many
opportunities throughout the year for our members to
train with other Jundokan affiliates around the world.
