Long Island School of
T'ai Chi Ch'uan
Chief Instructor:
Master Bob Klein
T'ai-chi-Ch'uan
provides training for stress reduction, improved health and vitality, emotional and mental
calm, physical coordination, increased concentration, flexibility and self defense, Its
origins date back thousands of years. The training at this school is part of this unbroken
evolution of the art of healing, self defense and personal development.
We offer small, comfortable, relaxed classes. Each
person is worked with individually, according to their needs.
Sometimes it is difficult to decide to attend a
class, even though you know it will improve your life. The reasons for this difficulty are
varied. You may be shy and uncomfortable trying new things in front of other people. You
may he very busy and have not set aside the time in your life for your own health and well
being. There may simply be inertia - the difficulty of just getting up to make a phone
call or visit the school.
Please be assured that you will find here a spirit
of cooperation. Everyone roots for each other and supports each others' efforts. The
benefits your mind and body receive from the class far outweigh the effort to call to make
an appointment and the effort to visit the school. Sometimes, we just have to say,
"When am I going to do something for myself? When, if not now?"
We also have many training videos and books which
can help you learn at home. And, if you are really uncomfortable learning in front of
others, there are conveniently scheduled private classes.
This school is well known for the integrity and
genuineness of its training. This is not a slick commercial school. You do not need
special uniforms and there are no colored belt rankings to make one person feel superior
to another. You proceed at your own comfortable pace.
Teaching Staff
Bob Klein is one of the
world's best known T'ai Chi Ch'uan masters and has been teaching since 1975, after many
years of study. His career began as a zoologist, studying animal behavior at Cornell
University, the New York Zoological Society and the Smithsonian Tropical Research
Institute. He was attracted to T'ai Chi Ch'uan because it is based on the movements of
animals. Mr. Klein has studied this system with many teachers including Grandmaster
William C.C. Chen. He has also studied the healing systems of several nature-oriented
cultures, working with healers of those cultures. Mr. Klein teaches forms, Push Hands,
full-contact T'ai chi Kickboxing, Chi-Gung, weapons and healing. He is the author of three
books on T'ai Chi Ch'uan and has produced many instructional videotapes, and has been
featured in such magazines as "Inside Kung Fu" and "T'ai Chi
Magazine".
Jean Goulet is a senior
instructor at this school, a certified teacher of aerobics and stretching and has a PTA
(Physical Therapy). She has been featured in several T'ai chi and exercise videos and is a
student of Chi Gung and accupressure massage. She has taught T'ai Chi and exercise in many
schools, colleges and exercise studios. Her approach to teaching T'ai Chi is very
personal, practical, delightful and refreshing.
T'ai Chi Ch'uan Yang Form
These are the slow, flowing movements practiced since ancient
times in the parks of China. the Yang form (named after Master Yang) dissolves tension,
promotes healing of the body and increases your ability to concentrate. Based on the
natural movements fo animals, the Yang Form develops coordination (even with clumsy
people), calms the mind and emotions. The body becomes as fluid and graceful as flowing
water. It also helps you to let go of bad habits and gain more awareness of your body.
Push Hands
This is a two person sport or exercise
which teaches you to neutralize force directed against you without tensing up. You learn
to remain "rooted" into the ground while allowing your body to flow with the
force of your partner. Push Hands teaches you to generate internal energy
("Chi") which is used in self defense and healing. You learn to be aware of your
partner's pattern of attention, to know what he is going to do before he does it. Push
Hands teaches students to balance firmness and yielding, to use the "Yin/Yang"
principles, developing healthy relationships with other people. You learn to use the mind
and body efficiently and effortlessly and to act spontaneously.
Series of movements based on one
particular animal. These serve as the basis for animal styles of Kung Fu and develop the
skills of the body to their maximum degree. These are classical chinese Kung Fu forms
(Snake, Tiger, Praying Mantis, Monkey, Crane, Eagle Claw, and 'Drunken' styles). They are
aerobic and some are acrobatic.
Series of movements using ancient Chinese
weapons (sword, sabre, spear, staff, knife, etc.). These serve as the basis for martial
arts weapons skills and can be used as general aerobic conditioning. Actual weapons
sparring is also taught.
This is considered to be the most
devastating form of martial arts and is very practical on the streets. It includes
kicking, punching, grappling, groundfighting and joint locking. Its movements are
unorthodox, unexpected and unrelenting. The T'ai Chi Ch'uan system of Chinese Kickboxing
is a "phantom style", meaning that it is the system of Kung Fu which uses the
other person's force against them and uses the power of internal energy rather than
muscular tension. It is known for its speed, power and being almost impossible to stop.
This system of Kung Fu includes the animal styles of Snake, Tiger, Mantis, Monkey, Crane
and Drunken.
T'ai Chi massage is a form of
accupressure. It eliminates tension, restores blood flow and awakens each muscle and nerve
so that you feel fully alive. Chi Gung are simple healing exercises combining slow
movement, proper breathing and concentration to strengthen the immune system, reduce
stress, enhance sensory awareness, strengthen concentration and develop a feeling of
centered well being. Stretching/Awareness through Movement combines stretching, yoga and
similar exercises to loosen and strengthen the joints, connect mind and body, break
patterns of tension and rigidity and allow you to become more aware of your body.
