Kokushi Dojo

Mr. Nagayasu Ogasawara, 7th Dan

 

Mr. Nagayasu Ogasawara was born in Osaka, Japan in1940. When he was 10 years old he started judo practice in a small dojo in his village. With continued practice he became proficient enough to become captain of variouse judo clubs in his middle school, high school, and college at Kokushikan University in Tokyo. After graduation, he became instructor of physical education and judo coach at Kokushikan University, where he remained for four years.

In 1967, Mr. Ogasawara came to the United States to teach judo. Over the years, since his arrival, he has coached many champions and prize winning judo teams at both State and National competitions throughout the United States. Mr. Ogasawara is cheif instructor at Kokushi Dojo in Westwood, New Jersey, where he teaches many young people and adults the sport of judo. From 1984 through 1989, he was an associate professor at the United States branch of Kokushikan University. In 1989 Mr. Ogasawara became the head judo coach at West Point United States Military Academy Judo Club, until 1996.

Mr. Ogasawara received the Coach of the Year Award from the following organizations: U.S. Olympic Committee and the Metropolitan Judo Association, both in 1996, U.S. National Collegiate Judo Association in 1993, and the Eastern Collegiate Judo Association in 1991.

Happy, self-confident physically fit youngsters are the most important product of the Kokushi Dojo Judo, Karate Aikido and Jujitsu School, located here in Westwood. In Japan, these arts are a form of moral training that build a quiet self-confidence, Judo, Karate, Aikido and Jujitsu, taught in the Japanese tradition, are not onlyeffective means of self-defense, popular competitive sports, and body conditioning. character and serenity of mind.

The literal meaning of Judo is "the gentle way." Proper Judo training teaches an aggressive child to avoid conflict and a shy child to be poised. It is easy for a youngster to avoid belligerence if he or she is inwardly secure and confident.

The students' competitive skills are enhanced by winning trophies at local tournaments that all students are encouraged to attend. Kokushi Dojo has produced many state, national and international winners.

As the director of Kokushi Dojo, Mr. N. Ogasawara forms the policies that will affect you as a student. Having reached maturity in Japan, Mr.Ogasawara or Sensei (respected teacher), as his students call him, has brought qualities to his school that come from his Asian upbringing and training. The main quality is respect. Respect for teacher and student, for body and mind, and for effort given. Mr. Ogasawara is a 7th degree black belt master in Judo, Karate and Jujitsu.
