Lenape Aikido

Instrutor: Nizam Taleb, 5th Dan

Nizam Taleb’s Aikido career began in September, 1972, under T. Ichimura, Sensei, 6th Dan Aikido, 6th Dan Iaido. After only two years of intense training Nizam was permitted by Sensei Ichimura to begin teaching the sword and staff techniques as a integral part of Aikido on a regular basis at the Uppsala Aikido Club. From 1984 to the time he left Sweden in 1994, Nizam trained at one of the affiliated dojos for Y. Kobayashi, Sensei, 8th Dan and Igarashi sensei, 7th Dan Aikido: Iyasaka Aikido Club, Stockholm, Sweden. Nizam instructed and trained under Urban Aldenklint, 5th Dan Aikido.

Sensei Acxel Saravia, a qualified Sho Dan Aikido that also holds a San Dan in Karate Do Shoto Kan and a Ni Dan in Judo, will be teaching the children class. He has ample experience working with children helping them to develop their Aikido skills with discipline while maintaining an atmosphere of joy and fun. He will be teaching a 45-minute class focusing on gross motor skills, the peaceful principles of cooperative coexistence, and of course having fun. Class times are Tuesday, 7:00 to 7:45 p.m.

Lenape Aikikai was founded in 1994 by the current assistant chief instructor Acxel Saravia. The first location was at the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ.

From 1995 to the present the current chief instructor, Nizam Taleb, has been with the dojo. Together Nizam and Acxel have taught students of Aikido at the Tech Center until September 2001. At that time our dojo was called the Technical Center Aikido Club. We moved in October 2001 to the Shore Fitness Center at Harding Highway in Mays Landing, NJ. We changed our name at that time from the Technical Center Aikido Club to Lenape Aikikai.

We are a traditional Aikido school where we find our inspiration in the founder's philosophy. We are aware of the different styles and are very much influenced by Kobayashi Shihan, Sugano Shihan, as well as Nishio Shihan. We accept all styles to practice with us and we continue to learn from all styles of Aikido. However, we do stress the relation with the sword and empty hand techniques. In this way we feel our knowledge and understanding of Aikido deepens as we progress.

Kids Aikido will be taught starting in February 2004. We are looking forward to integrating our club with the Mays Landing community in an effort to spread aikido to the young and old alike.

A true warrior is always armed with the three things: the radiant sword of pacification; the mirror of bravery, wisdom, and friendship; and the precious jewel of enlightenment. -- Morihei Ueshiba O'Sensei (founder of Aikido)

What is Aikido
The Japanese word Aikido is written with three characters which translate as "the way of unity with the fundamental force of the universe".

Aikido is a true budo or Martial Way that evolved in the historic tradition of Japanese warrior arts. Studied in earnest, budo is more than a science of tactics and self-defense - it is a discipline for perfecting the spirit.

Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba, known as O-Sensei (Great Teacher) to more than one million students of Aikido throughout the world. Even as a young man, he was an extraordinary martial artist, a master of the sword, the staff, the spear, and the art of ju-jitsu. But O-Sensei also had a strong spiritual drive, and brooded over the futility of a path based on victory over others.

Dynamics of Aikido
The essence of all Aikido techniques is spherical motion around a stable, energized center. Even when the direction appears to be straight forward or backward, close observation reveals the Aikidoist's movements are in fact circular.

Properly executed, some techniques are spectacular, sending an opponent flying through the air. Others are like sleight-of-hand: small, deft movements that immobilize the aggressor. Both results are achieved through precise use of leverage, inertia, gravity, and the action of centrifugal and centripetal forces. Ultimately, it is the energy of the attack itself which brings down the attacker.

Increased stamina, flexibility, and muscle development occur naturally as a result of training, but the techniques themselves do not depend on strength for effectiveness; Aikido can be practiced by men and women of all ages.
