Avoiding Conflict/Fight Preparation
Work as a group, a team, a unit: Three man Delta formation
Shout "Back Off" - raises your adrenaline - prepares you for possible fight, tells enemy you are serious - creates temporary shock effect, informs other members of your group to be prepared for attack, tells witnesses you tried to avoid fight.

Only shout this once, do not step back, it makes you look weak.

Survey Situation - How many attackers? Are there weapons involved? this changes the situation and your response to it.

At this point use medium approach - not hard, not soft, don't challenge or anger assailant, yet don't be submissive.

Survival Tips
*In dealing with hostile or aggressive people, show no fear, yet, never insult or provoke them. Project self-confidence.
*Always give the opponent an honorable way out of the situation, as much as is possible, don't put his "honor" on the line.

* Remember that you never know whom you are dealing with. Never assume the person is rational or reasonable.
* Most fights begin before the physical confrontation. "Almost every fight I ever saw began before any punches were thrown." (professional bouncer) i.e. proper verbal skills can often end a fight before it begins, and, at the very least, you have some warning before a physical fight actually begins.

* Don't be scared by someone's barking (or "woofing") this barking is a test; the aggressor is testing your self image, your strength of character.

* Remember: showing no fear is not the same as feeling no far. Know the difference.

Pre Contact
Physical Surroundngs - Be aware and use to your advantage. Example: Table covered with flyers, if you stand with the table to your back, opponent can push you into it but if you stand with the tabel in front of you - you have a physical barrier, you can push it on him or use it to your advantage in other ways. Podium, chairs, flags, books, can all be used in self-defense. Sometimes just hearing "I am calling the police" can act as a deterrent.

Contact
Hands up high, creates barrier, prepares your hands for defense or attack. Use the "flinch response" to your advantage.
* Be aware of your distance from a subject. If you stand too close you may be unable to stop his strike from landing. Give yourself room to maneuver.
* Focus your eyes and see movements that indicate an attack. Do not stare into his eyes because they can be used to distract your concentration.
* Once you realize there is no escaping a physical, violent, confrontation - hit first, and always follow up with fast multiple strikes until your attacker is no longer a threat to you. Remember - Action beats Reaction.

Makeshift Weapons
Items you can have on your table that can be used to fight back or preempt an attack: Liquid, a hot cup of coffee or tea thrown in the attackers face will startle them long enough for you to either attack of get away. An umbrella, a brief case, a walking cane, paper weights, coffee mugs, hats, all are useful weapons.

Two v.s. one
If you outnumber your attacker; each person grabs a different set of limbs, person in front bear hugs the attacker, person behind the attacker should go for the legs. Better to come in from an angle or side. The person grabbing the legs should now pull them off the floor while the front person eases him to the ground.

Standing Techniques
"Stun & Run"
Defense Vs. Grabs and holds
Kicks and punches, elbows, palms and knife edge.

Takedowns, pressure points, use of key chains

Defense vs. Knife Attack or any edged weapon; broken beer bottle, glass etc. Distinguish between "committed attack" and slashing. If someone is chasing you with a knife - don't step back or run straight, instead - side step. A determined attacker running at full speed will find it impossible to 'turn the corner'. Use kicks vs. Knife attacker.

Multiple Attackers
The proper response is to counter the attack with as much violence of action as can be mustered. Multiple offenders facing a lone individual justifies rapid escalation on the force continuum. Don't be afraid to do so. Dealing with multiple attackers will require a great deal of affressive movement on the part of the defender. Regardless of what type of weapons are involved, a moving target is hard to hit, so keep moving! Avoid the tendency to stand and fight it out. Move in such a way so as to put the assailants in each other's 'line of fire'.

KIAI - Spirit Shout. "I also screamed, yelled, and generally acted like a crazy man. It's a kind of interesting thing how suspects will give someone they think is crazy a wide berth." (Police Mag)
Doing the unexpected can have fantastic results. "Yelling, when used in conjunction with other forms of active resistance, will help disorient your attacker, enabling other techniques to work more effectively." (Arthur Cohen)

Take Cover
(Environmental Awareness) Taking note of possible cover, as well as escape routes PRIOR to making contact, is a good idea when responding to any situation.

Ground To Standing
Kicks and takedowns, block his kicks to your ribs by rolling in his direction using your knees to block and smash his shins. Use leg hook takedowns, kicks to his legs and groin. Protect your head ("Shampoo" technique). Stand up as soon as you can and get out of danger.

Ground
* How to fall; forward and back
* Mount, Guard, pressure points, ribs, neck
* Prevent him from drawing his weapon.
* Defense vs. ground knife attacks
* Defense vs. rape.

Third Party Intervention
Standing, or on ground
