Jason Pierce

Instructor
Sifu Jason Pierce F.S.M.A was born in England in 1971 in the small costal town of Hastings.

As a child he had always shown interest in the Martial Arts and began taking Shin-obi Kai Ninjutsu at the age of eleven. He studied this for three years and at the age of fourteen he began studying Kyokushin-kai karate under sensei Jim Elvery.

He was an avid clicker and knockdown tournament competitor and won several national Kyokushin-kai championships. However in 1988 only six months from taking his 1st Dan Black belt grading he traveled to London to enter an Open tournament. He had previously only entered competitions that were closed to all except Kyokushin-kai Karateka. With his experience of winning such tournaments he felt confident that his skills would serve him well on the open tournament circuit. He soon learned that this was not to be the case and was soundly beaten by a Lau Gar Kung fu practitioner who was several belts bellow him. He watched on as the Lau Gar practitioners won event after event and realized that he had become demoralized by the experience.

He continued to train but after three months finally quit and sought out the closest Lau Gar school. This turned out to be in London and he traveled seventy miles three times a week for classes. During this time he realized that Lau Gar offered everything he had been looking for and he continued to train under Trevor Gill in South London and eventually Curtis Page (chief instructor for the London region). He was soon training six times a week, competing in two or more open tournaments a month, and was selected for the British national Squad. By 1993 he had won many national and international championships, including becoming the W.A.K.O European heavyweight champion. In 1994 the London Predators team (of which Pierce was a key member) won EVERY national team event in the country, and Pierce himself had won the Martial Arts Illustrated national league championship and the National Semi Contact Super League grand championship as well as the British masters Invitational.

What is Freestyle Karate?

Freestyle Karate is a generic term used to describe a non rigid form of Martial Arts.

The Freestyle karate concept was originally developed by Alfie Lewis who is accredited as being one of the greatest tournament fighter of all time, and chief instructor of the Free Style Karate Association (F.S.K.A) of which we are affiliated too.

Our blend of Freestyle is based on Lau Gar Kung Fu, but is the modernization of many of its principles.

The Syllabus is designed to teach practical techniques that can be effectively applied in the modern world. The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (W.A.K.O), the International Armature Kickboxing Sport Association (I.A.K.S.A) and the World Kickboxing and Karate Association (W.K.A) all acknowledge this system as the TOP tournament fighting style on the circuits today!

Unlike many smaller associations these three encompass some 80 countries as their members including the United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union to name but a few.

W.A.K.O is known to have over 1,200,00 members alone.

With this accreditation it is easy to see why so many practitioners of the Martial Arts choose to learn or compliment their traditional Martial Arts training with this system!

In Freestyle the individual practitioners are encouraged to find their individuality with techniques, and are not chained to rigid traditional concepts. This is not to suggest that traditional Martial Arts are in any way inferior, but rather to suggest that you should take what you learn from them and allow yourself to think outside their boundaries.

To quote the late Bruce Lee "favor formlessness so that you can assume all forms and since you have no style, you can fit in with all the styles". Hence the name Freestyle.
