Diane
Ortenzio-Cooling, a sixth degree black belt, has
been training in the martial arts for over twenty-six
years. She is the chief instructor (sensei) at
Sierra Dojo. In addition to Isshin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo
(traditional weapons), she also trains in grappling
arts, modern weapons, and personal safety.
Sensei
Ortenzio's passion for the martial arts is contagious,
and her caring attitude for her students is evident. She
believes that steady training with attention to detail
and an emphasis on the underlying principles of martial
arts will build individuals with strength and the
ability to handle themselves in any situation.
Sensei has
dedicated her life to empowering students to learn and
grow as individuals through martial arts training.
Isshin-Ryu
Karate
The core art taught at Sierra Dojo is Isshin-Ryu
Karate. It is a fusion of two other Okinawan forms
of karate, Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu, as created by
Master Tatsuo Shimabuku.
The style is characterized by swift, powerful punches
and kicks delivered from natural body positions.
Students begin by learning proper
body mechanics, power generation,
focus, accuracy of technique, and how to use
their intelligence to prevent violence or bring it to a
swift and successful conclusion.
As students progress, they are
exposed to more depth and breadth in training.
Grappling, joint locks, and control
techniques are all part of the Isshin-Ryu system, as
well as traditional and modern weapons.
This art and this dojo is for
people who want to know why and how things work...and
what will work for their age and body type.
Comments
on Belts and Ranking
Colored belts are a method for students to track their
own progress, and for instructors to determine the
appropriate training for the student's skill level.
We do not
conduct gradings every week or month. They occur when a
student has demonstrated their understanding of the
principles they have been exposed to, and their
ability to apply that knowledge.
You can buy a belt for $5 at any
martial arts supply store. What makes the belt
legitimate and worth something to the wearer is the
knowledge learned and the character they developed while
earning it. This is the basis for belt promotions in
Sierra Dojo.
Our Mission
We believe in the power of the
spirit, and the positive change it can bring about in
our lives. Through a structured program of Isshin-Ryu
Karate, we will help individuals to accomplish their
personal goals of good physical fitness, effective
self-defense, and black belt achievement.
We will challenge our students to
do their best, be the best, and bring out the best in
themselves and others in our community. We believe this
path involves the principles of honor, integrity,
honesty, fortitude, and humility.
