What is ISSHINRYU KARATE?
One might call Karate an educated way of street fighting, but as you
study karate you'll find that there is much more to it than this.
Karate as a martial art, which was perfected in Okinawa after many centuries in
the Orient, is based upon both mental and body discipline. It is considered to
be one of the finest forms of physical exercise.
Isshinryu Karate is an Okinawan martial
arts system developed by the late Tatsuo Shimabuku, 10th. Degree
Black Belt. The most notable aspect of this system is the vertical
punch strengthened by the thumb on top position, and the use of
speed and snap to generate power.
Isshinryu means “One Heart Way” and
emphasizes the unity and brotherhood of all. We develop a skill, but
will use it only as a last resort! See more here
LITTLE
DRAGONS
Our youngest Karateka starting at the age of 4 and 5.
These children are exposed to martial arts training through a
variety of activities and games geared at developing balance,
coordination, focus and reflex. Children learn the importance of
defensive moves and are taught respect for others through activities
requiring teamwork. “Stranger Danger” information is included in the
program with tips such as developing a code word with your child,
how to walk away from someone and who strangers really are. Children
earn one star for each 10 classes attended, after 5 stars they are
awarded their dragon patch. Children may progress to a regular
children’s program after approximately one year in Little Dragons or
at the age of 6. Classes are 1/2 hour and meet on Wednesday
from 5:30 - 6:00 PM. and Saturday 10:00 - 10:30 am.
Children's classes
are divided into groups of skill levels. Our program teaches basic
blocking, kicking and punching skills, self-defense techniques and
Kata (forms) in a fun energetic atmosphere. Children at Smithtown
Karate Academy are goal-oriented achievers. Weekly “Lessons of the
Week” reinforce values of life as well as Karate. Fifty (50) minute
classes meet Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Call for Hours.
Adults receive the same concerned
instruction as all students at the academy. Classes are Monday &
Wednesday 8:10 - 9:30 PM, and Saturday 11:40-12:30.
Weapons in Okinawan Isshinryu Karate
include Bo, Sai, and Tonfa. The Okinawan people in defense of their
homes, land and family used these farm tools. All students from
Green Belt and above are able to train with these ancient weapons.
