About Us
This highly sophisticated and comprehensive martial art
from the Philippines is weapons based, but ultimately an empty
hands system. Developed for “mass attack” as well as single
opponent confrontations, the training heightens students’
awareness of their surroundings and teaches them to use their
environment as tools of
combat. Students will learn to use single sticks (representing
a bladed weapon), double sticks, short sticks (to simulate knife
training) and, later, everyday objects, such as keys, cell
phones, flashlights, umbrellas, bottles, books, shirts, etc., as
an effective means of self-defense. Use of both the left and
right hand develops coordination. Drills and techniques taught
in a fluid, non-restrictive manner allow students to enhance
their natural attributes and improve their sense of timing,
speed, awareness, balance, agility, and confidence.
Practitioners of these arts are noted for their ability to fight
with weapons or empty hands interchangeably.
The Instructor - Guro Ryan Gruhn
In our Filipino Martial Arts
class we focus on what the ancient kali warriors of the
Philippines once focused on; fighting. My class consists of
working through the many weapon yielding techniques while also
giving much importance to the realm of empty hand combat. Both
in all their individual respects (different weapons, punching,
kicking, grappling, etc). I credit each an every style that we
know of today but want to point out that this class is not for
“show.” We don’t try to be flashy or commit to training that we
don’t find useful to better ourselves as fighters and more
importantly, individuals. In other words “If you see it taught
you see it fought. ™” Everything that is trained in our
curriculum comes from experience in some form or another. I choose to test the techniques I bring to my students in events
such as the Dog Brother’s ~ Gathering of the Pack
along with other various Real Contact Stick Fighting
events. My instructors before me have also done similar events.
In a day and age where Martial
Arts Combat is taking a whole new level of meaning; an example
being the explosion of the
UFC. I
choose to take the arts several steps further and add real,
live, damage inflicting weapons along with the option for the
fight to have an empty handed aspect as well (punches, elbows,
knees, kicks, head butts, etc). Why
do I do it? It’s not for the money; to this day I don’t think
there has ever been one paying event in my field. Is it for the
fame? I wear a fencing mask when I fight; no one has a clue who
I am. Is it for the passion of knowing that every single
technique I train has merit in a real
live battle situation; 100%.
I
often get asked “Is combat required if I wish to take your
class?” No, Real Contact Weapons fighting is dangerous and not
for everyone! But rest assured, everything you will learn in my
class comes from battle tested scenarios where I myself or
people before me are confidant in saying that what is taught can
and is also fought!
